'Souls RPG @ Tumblr

Please check the FAQ before asking anything, thanks!

Types of questions to ASK on the Tumblr:
  • Questions related to 'Souls as a whole, including, but not limited to:
    • Rules, procedures, regulations
    • Luperci, the 'Soulsverse, game mechanics, realism
    • Plots, events, features
    • Roleplaying, writing, etiquette
    • Statistics, analytics, technical stuff
  • Questions related to the administration
  • Questions answerable by only the administration
  • Complaints or other private/confidential commentary, most of which is not published

The following should NOT be asked to this Tumblr:
  • Questions irrelevant to 'Souls
  • Personal questions to individual administrators unrelated to 'Souls
  • Questions related to a specific pack -- these should be directed to the pack's leadership
  • "How to" questions related to graphics, coding, etc. We're not opposed to answering a broad question about image permission rights or graphics-related rules, but for "how to" questions, the Talents forum is much more useful, would provide a wider range of answers, and be more easily accessed by others with the same or similar questions.
  • Error and troubleshooting questions -- these should be posted to the Maintenance topic, Questions and Help, or via a PM to the 'Souls Assemblage account. It's hard for us to troubleshoot stuff via Tumblr since it's not very good at facilitating a back-and-forth conversation where we ask for details/specifics.
Thanks! :)

Has 'Souls ever had trouble with spammers?
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

Yes, at numerous times in the past, but we’ve always been able to come up with some solution to preventing them from accessing and damaging the board via postings, etc. Some of the measures we’ve taken include banning known spam spiders from the domain entirely, banning individually troubling IP addresses, using CAPTCHA-type technology to prevent their registration, etc.

Ezboard was also hacked or taken down by spammers in 2005; ‘Souls was one of the boards affected by this, but ezboard recovered most of the data lost in the attack.

How much do you take frequent character dropping (and their reasons) into account when evaluating auxiliary requests?
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

As per our Requests information:

Inconsistency is also a factor — players who frequently drop, swap their characters or quit the game and return may not be approved as readily without solid activity with all characters — if you’re not sure whether your muse will work out with this new character, use the LASKY forum to test them first.

As long as your activity is solid, we don’t really mind a lot of dropping and switching characters. However, we understand it is a pain for those who plot and thread with these characters who get dropped, so we may send a reminder to a particularly excessive case of dropsies. The reminder isn’t anything serious nor a “warning” — it simply states such behavior isn’t well-liked by other roleplayers and may result in threading and roleplay difficulties in the future, should it continue, and that they should consider character choices carefully, testing their potentials out in LASKY if necessary. :)

In the event of a polyamorous relationship, how exactly would the puppy points go? Say there's a lesbian couple and a male. The male wants a child, and the lesbians do too. So the male and one of the women get jiggy, and say there's three pups. At that point, would the other woman be able to donate a point? If the lesbians kept two pups and the man one, would each person donate a single point? Or would it just be the male and the biological mother of the pups?
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

Only the biological parents would be able to donate a point. Polyamorous relationships receive no added benefits outside of… existing, pretty much — traditional, two-person mateships receive no added benefits outside of the heart icon. The exception to this would be if it’s a multi-father litter: three parents may donate points in this case. However, the maximum litter size is still six — three parents cannot donate three points each.

Do you guys ever ask questions on the Tumblr just so you can answer them and pretend that a member asked them?
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

Yes — we’d like to think it’s less deceptive than pretending a member asked them, though. c; Sometimes we may have an opinion on a particularly popular subject and no venue to speak about them (we wouldn’t want to do a PSA over every little opinion we have, after all) and in these cases, we feel the Tumblr provides a pretty sweet way to communicate.

How do boobs work?! I mean, like, female wolves/canines have, like, six or eight or even ten! So how would that like, translate to Optime form?! Why do they even have boobs?! Humans only have boobs because our babies would suffocate without them due to our lack of a muzzle! So a Luperci would need boobs! D: HELP EDUCATE ME, SA!
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

We’ve answered a similar question before:

Aesthetics, mostly. We really don’t think it’s necessary to patrol images to ensure complete realism because that wouldn’t be much fun for the artists. Even if wolves’ fur would normally cover these areas, artists do take license — or they just don’t realize it. Moreover, since ‘Souls is based on werewolves of literature, most do not have more than one set of breasts. Although we do try to adhere to realism, there are some things that we do assume otherwise.

Essentially — we presume in Optime form, when not lactating, a female Optime has breasts analogous to human female mammary glands (that is, a pair of breasts in the pectoral area) — their other teats are, much like a canine, hardly visible. When they have children and are lactating, it can be assumed their other teats become more prominent to feed the entire litter of children. However, as not every roleplayer at ‘Souls wants to roleplay things relevant to sex, reproduction, etc., we do not mandate anything with regard to the realism of optime breasts, genitals, heat cycles, etc.

Essentially — as long as it’s got a basis in reality (e.g., a Luperci female’s cycle being more canine, in displaying a prominent heat cycle and its characteristics, or a Luperci female’s cycle being more human, in bleeding to shed the uterine lining and cycling less obviously) we don’t particularly mind how you roleplay these sorts of things.

We don’t want to set down official guidelines, because doing so would force all roleplayers to adhere to the guidelines, essentially forcing them to either be incredibly vague or read up on and write about things they’d rather not read or write about.

If a character is dropped, can it simply be assumed that they are still living in 'Souls / wandering around, but not interacting with anyone or being mentioned in threads?
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

If the character in question is a loner, then yes, it can be assumed that they are still around. However, if the character is a pack wolf, this is not a valid option, as a dropped character will be removed from the pack OOCly and ICly — NPC status is the only option to keep pack characters around ‘Souls.

how often does the souls assemblage look at chat logs?
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

Only when a problem is reported — otherwise, we don’t look at them.

Is there any feasible way that desert species can exist in 'Souls as companions? For example, certain desert fox species, reptiles, or even dromedary camels?
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

Yes, provided proper precautions are taken to protect desert dwellers from extremely cold temperatures.

Recently, there was a solar eclipse visible in many parts of the world. When eclipses and other similar astronomical events occur, is it okay to play as if they do so in 'Souls as well, so long as it would be visible in NA? Also, what kind of significance do you think it would have for such a young and spiritually scattered population of wolves?
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

The most recent solar eclipse was not visible from Nova Scotia, but yes! Since the ‘Souls timeline coincides with our real life timeline (it’s 2012 in the game when it’s 2012 here), it’s perfectly fine to play out and make reference to such astronomical events as long as the events are actually visible from our territories. Of course, if you wanted to bring in a character in the future who would have spent the past week in Japan or California, they might have caught a glimpse of the eclipse. :)

As for significance, we think that is highly dependent on individual characters. Spiritually inclined or otherwise, beliefs are likely to vary greatly from population to population, and isolated packs might derive meaning from it, and some would not. However, it is worth noting that none of the wolves would likely understand what was going on, as they do not have insight into astronomical knowledge, even if it is considered common knowledge among humans. This would have to affect any interpretation the wolves made of such an event.

Are Luperci and non-Luperci about the same, intelligence-wise? The RP Guide and the Backstory of 'Souls both say that Luperci are far more intelligent, but it's roleplayed as if they have the same intelligence.
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

We’ve answered this question before! However, it seems we forgot to update the RP Guide about this, so shame on us :(

How realistic is a Luperci wearing glasses, be it for reading purposes or to clear blurry vision? Is it possible for a Luperci to craft eye ware (i.e. sunglasses, "prescription glasses", etc.)?
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

Unfortunately, no pair of human glasses would fit on a canine face. Luperci are also unlikely to be able to create their own glasses.

It may be possible for lenses to be salvaged form human glasses and then held and used as tiny magnifying glasses or even monocles. It would be very difficult to refit the lenses into new frames though, as the precision required is likely beyond what Luperci are capable of. As with the bicycle, glasses were first introduced around the 1300’s-1400’s, putting them outside of our generally accepted Luperci technological periods (which are around 800’s-1000’s AD on the more liberal end).

Can you make a spot on the profiles for 'species'? It's hard to play a racist character when people don't always put how obviously wolf/coyote/whatever they are.
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

Most players use the “Luperci” field in their profiles to fill in species, but we do not require any fields to be filled, and species listed, exact percentages or otherwise, are not always an accurate indicator of appearance. A character may be 75% coyote and 25% wolf, but still look like a full wolf.

In the end, it is up to the player to keep their profiles updated with relevant information —we certainly recommend it! Remember that your profiles are tools and reference for others, and not just information for yourself. We’d also recommend establishing appearances in your actual roleplay when threading with someone new — appearances are an important part of first impressions after all!

If you can’t tell what your thread partners’ character looks like from their roleplay or profile, don’t be afraid to just ask either. ^^ A quick PM or OOC note in your next reply is all it takes!

Would bicycles be able to be used in the Luperci world? For the bigger canines, would it be possible for a craftsman to be able to modify or even create a new bike from scratch to be able to be ridden?
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

Most likely not.

The chains and gears of bicycles rust and break very easily, so it is unlikely for any existing bikes to have survived in usable condition. Building a bike from scratch is also unlikely. While the main bodies of some better preserved bikes might be salvageable, new parts would need to be shaped and welded. Additionally, we’ve historically erred to the side of “no” as far as Luperci successfully operating on small mechanical parts, which would include bike gears. Note that humans’ earliest precursor to the bicycle came in the 1400’s, which is far outside the technology level of most Luperci societies.

We don’t really think a bicycle would bring a Luperci any advantage over its natural forms of travel anyway. Storage space is limited and probably wouldn’t exceed what a Luperci could carry in a backpack. Unpaved terrain and roads overgrown with vegetation would both be be incredibly difficult to navigate as well.

Can the search option not be limited to only queries 4 letters or longer? Sometimes I'll be searching for something like "NPC" or "pack" or a pack acronym (CdA, CdC, AW), and I can't because it is too short. Can this be fixed?
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

No.

We’re sorry that it’s inconvenient not being able to search for acronyms (though you can search for “pack,” as it’s 4 letters), but the limitation is for the protection of the board as a whole and helps prevent the database from being overloaded with queries. Note that anyone can use the search, including guests and bots; allowing 3-letter words opens the floor to searches for “the,” among other very small words, and 2-letters would be even worse.

It is in everyone’s interest that the database not be overloaded, as this results in the intermittent “max_user_connections” mySQL error, which completely kills access to the board until things calm down.

As an alternative, we’d recommend using Google’s search and limiting the results to the board. For example, if you wanted to search for “NPC” on the board, type this into Google: “NPC site:soulsrpg.com/forum” Or, if you wanted to search for “CdA” use “CdA site:soulsrpg.com/forum” You can also utilize Google’s various other search syntax, so “CdA OR CdC site:soulsrpg.com/forum” will get you results matching both “CdA” or “CdC.”

Hope that helps!

In addition to being added to the ranks, if the NPC has an account are we allowed to request that the account be titled up too? (With the (NPC) tag next to it)
soulsrpg soulsrpg Said:

Yes, NPCs may be titled.

Do note however, that despite being titled, such NPC accounts will still have the user permissions of a “wanderer,” which means the account will not have posting permissions in any IC forums.
